sunny days and cupcakes!

March 7, 2010

we were supposed to go to a new park with a friend the other day, but as it happens so much with kids, one of our combined six kids, got sick (poor guy has rotavirus – poor mama, too.  btdt!).  we ended up going on saturday with john, and then walked to a cute little cupcake shop a couple blocks away.  i can’t wait for spring.  it was so much fun to get out & run around!

nomelie cupcakes in parker.  YUM.  they’re not cheap, BUT … the good part of paying $3 a cupcake, is you only eat ONE.  ;)  they were really yummy.  i finished off norah’s strawberry one.  i definitely want to try making some strawberry flavored baked goods.  never really thought about it before!  i always stick to the safe stuff.  orange, chocolate, banana ….  they have a neat little area for the kids with a nice vintage-inspired table set.  the grown ups get china plates – kids paper.  :P

i was trimming norah’s hair the other day when i realized i really messed up!  i always trim my kids har until it gets too straight.  then i have to start taking them in because as a hairdresser – i suck.  we used to go to a place called lollilocks until it closed.  so we gave sweet & sassy a try.  the girls approved!  norah even kept these sprouts in all day!  when i put her hair up, she rips it right out.

charlotte today.  she will be four months old soon.  it goes by so fast.  she’s sleeping on me right now, such a cutie.  everyone always ooohs and ahhhs over the red hair.  and she gives a huge smile to say thanks.  i think she’s going to be a sweet one.  there are so many similarities between her & ethan, it’s so funny how genetics work!

anyone have any fun kid’s lunch suggestions?  we’re getting bored!  kayleigh picked out a new bento/lunchbox today.  hoping it will  help spruce things up a bit.  we’re definitely in a rut!  i made her a couple chocolate covered strawberries tonight to put in her lunch tomorrow.  i had a bunch of great bento lunch blogs saved, but lost them all when we got a new computer.

our odd kids and even kids are the matchers here. it just in looks, but personality, too. i’m so glad we finally have a redhead! otherwise i’d be really jealous! she’ll never be as red as ethan, but she’s close enough for me!

let me know how you like the goodbyn. i’ve eyed them ever since they were announced and am glad i waited… they’ve already dropped significantly in price! mallory’s laptop lunchbox is on its last leg, but we’re pushing to make it till the end of the year. we’ll have to get one for sioban soon anyway, so we’ll just pair them up. i was leaning towards the laptop 2.0, but am interested in your take on the goodbyn!

mallory is usually stuck with leftovers. i try to add a fruit, a vegetable, and then something fun-ish. i have chocolate strawberries from a friend in the fridge… she’ll totally get two tomorrow!

looks like you guys had fun, i love the shot of K on the zip line things. :) sorry we missed it! Nash is laying on my chest right now moaning and feeling crummy. i wish this would pass!

We make roll ups a lot= a tortilla shell spread with a bit of cream cheese then a slice or two of turkey and a slice of cheese. Roll it up and cut into small pieces. HTH

cake balls would be a fun thing you could put in there for dessert- and actually if you make a batch of them they fair pretty well in the freezer too… I imagine that the younger kiddos at home would be good at helping decorate them with sprinkles and things :) If you havent heard of cake balls- here is a recipe

Also my mom was a single mom- and made a lot of meals ahead for us to grab out of the fridge.. anyway one of our favorites was tuna salad- which was a good one to bring for lunch- basically noodles, celery, tuna, peas, cheese and mayo or miricle whip (add in anything, take out anything based on what your kiddos like)

siobhan – kayleigh has a laptop lunch, too … but we never use it for school, just outings and day trips. it’s too big for her lunch box, and we need to also bring her thermos separate. they just toss their lunches in a big laundry basket in the morning and it would be a pia for her to try to find it all. i think i will sew something up for it next year. i wonder if it fits in those neoprene built ny bags? do you just give it to her without a bag?

lora – no problem, you know we’ve been there, too – lol.

lindsey – we have made cake balls before, but they never looks a nice as bakerellas! i think it’s because i let the kids do it all!

angela – she likes that kind of stuff … sometimes. she’s so fickle. likes things one day, and not the next. drives me crazy!

we bought one of the plain sleeves for the laptop lunch and i sewed a bright rainbow ribbon handle onto it. she just carries it that way and carries her klean kanteen separately. they dump their lunches, too, but are allowed to keep water bottles on their desks.

how is the goodbyn working? i worry that sioban wouldn’t be able to close it when she is done. they somehow saw the new laptop lunches with the big, colorful lunch bags and really want those (alien for mal and pink for sioban, which is so typical). i am already getting paranoid thinking about sioban starting school!

Hi there could I reference some of the insight found in this blog if I reference you with a link back to your site?

do you use a template for the photos with the small photos? i don’t know how you have time to edit photos…with four kids. oh my, you are truly super mama!! after i upload all my pics in lightroom they usually just sit there for weeks until i finally decide to open them up in photo shop and resize and –maybe–post a few on my blog. lol

jen – i think that *might* be a coffee shop template. i can check into it tonight if you want!
